Set Asides Help Small Business Win Contracts

Effective November 2, 2011, the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) was amended to allow federal buyers - those who want to use GSA Schedule contracts to acquire goods or services - to set aside particular opportunities for small businesses.  This ruling is a boom to small businesses struggling to make inroads in the federal market.

Set-asides serve primarily two purposes.  They allow small businesses to successfully compete within a smaller pool of vendors and allow the agency issuing the set-aside to meet their small business goals.

Becoming a GSA vendor is the best way for small businesses to participate in the federal market. Why? The cost involved with obtaining a GSA Schedule contract is less prohibitive than that of chasing one of the large, agency-specific IDIQ's.  In this economy, you need to use every advantage at your disposal. And, in the long run, the federal government may become your most reliable and consistent customer.
